Symptoms of Fluoride Poisoning
United States Pharmacopeia, a guide to drug information, which lists some of the side-effects that can
result from the daily ingestion of the amount of fluoride found in 1 to 2 pints of artificially fluoridated water.
Aging the bone: The degenerative effects of skeletal fluorosis
Bone also has the ability to rejuvenate itself As older bone is removed by bone scavenger cells called osteoclasts, osteoblasts lay down collagen to produce a framework for new bone formation to renew the skeletal structure. Thus damage to collagen production in bone caninterfere with the normal processes of bone rejuvenation and repair throughout life.
Fluoride has been shown to interfere with collagen formation in osteoblasts and chondroblas. Increased production of imperfect collagen or collagen-like protein results in mineralization of tissues which should not be mineralized and vice versa, one would expect a calcification of ligaments cartilage and tendons as well as the formation of poorly and overly mineralized bone. This is exactly what happens after exposure to fluoride.
Hardening of the Arteries
In a number of areas where people consume water containing 3 parts per million fluoride or more, calcification of the arteries has been clinically correlated with the fluoride-induced bone disorders. Fibroblasts in the arterial cell walls are producing larger amounts of an imperfect collagen or collagen-like protein, resulting in hardening of the arteries or arteriosclerosis, the leading cause of death in the United States.
This is according to Dr. John Negalesko, director of the first year medical program at the Ohio State University Medical School.
Skin
Since collagen is the primary structural material of skin, damage to skin collagen can be expected to lead to the prematurely wrinkled skin. Dr. Wolfgang Klein and co-workers at the Seibersdorf Research Center in Austria reported that 1 part per million fluoride inhibits DNA repair enzyme activity by 50% .Since fluoride inhibits DNA repair enzyme activity, fluoride should also be expected to lead to an increase in genetic or chromosome damage.
This has indeed been found to occur in numerous studies showing that fluoride in water, even at the concentration of 1 part per million, can cause chromosome damage. How Fluoride WorksFluoride inhibits enzymes by binding to enzyme cofactors such as magnesium and phosphate, it was not until 1981 that chemists were able to explain how fluoride could chemically interact with enzymes themselves to cause enzyme inhibition.
Fluoride has the ability to form hydrogen bonds with some of the protein's amide groups; as a result, fluoride disrupts the hydrogen bonds holding the protein in its normal shape. In this way, fluoride can disrupt the enzyme activity of proteins whose ability to trigger a reaction is highly dependent on a shape stabilized by these hydrogen bonds.
The Aging Factor
ENZYME INHIBITION BY FLUORIDE AT 1 PART PER MILLION OR LESS
On 10/28/88 and 4/11/89, Battelle Laboratories in Columbus, Ohio under contract from the NTP reported an extremely rare form of liver cancer, hepatocholangiocarcinomas, in fluoride-treated male and female mice. Battelle also reported a relationship between fluoride and oral precancerous cells as well as a relationship between fluoride and oral tumors or cancers in both male and female rats.
The vast majority of all fluoride additives come from Tampa Bay, Florida smokestack scrubbers. The additives are a toxic byproduct of the super phosphate fertilizer industry . We're exposing innocent, unsuspecting people to deadly elements of lead, arsenic and radium, all of them carcinogenic. Because of the cumulative properties of toxins, the detrimental effects on human health are catastrophic.
Residents of cities that fluoridate have double the fluoride in their hip bones vis-a-vis the balance of the population. Worse, we discovered that fluoride is actually altering the basic architecture of human bones.
Skeletal fluorosis is a debilitating condition that occurs when fluoride accumulates in bones, making them extremely weak and brittle. The earliest symptoms? Cavity rates are low all across the industrialized world including Europe, which is 98% fluoride free. Low because of improved standards of living, less refined sugar, regular dental checkups, flossing and frequent brushing.
The greatest danger is that professional applications of fluoride are potentially lethal when systematically consumed in large quantities. Assistants need to know the levels of fluoride toxicity and how to prevent patients from swallowing topical preparations. They must be able to recognize the onset of symptoms and they must know how to administer emergency treatment if a patient swallows fluoride.

A tragic story
While the following story is a tragic occurrence, it is important to note the extreme dangers of ingesting professional applications of fluoride. In 1974 , a dental hygienist performed a routine prophylaxis on a three year old boy. Upon completion a topical fluoride treatment of 4 percent stannous was administered with a cotton swab. According to testimony, the hygienist handed the child a cup of water, became engrossed in conversation with another employee, and failed to provide the young patient with instructions. The child swallowed the water. Before leaving the office he complained of headache, dizziness, nausea and stomach ache. He vomited soon afterward. The hygienist instructed the mother to see a doctor at a nearby pediatric clinic. Because of delays in administering treatment at the clinic and a hospital emergency room, the boy became comatose and died. A toxicologist later testified that the child had consumed three times the lethal dosage.
Levels of toxicity for children range from 17-35 mg for the onset of symptoms. Lethal doses have been estimated between 550 -1100 mg. In contrast, an average of 1 mg fluoride is ingested with toothpaste. The amount of fluoride in the solutions for school mouth rinsing programs contains approximately 2-9 mg.
In cases of mild poisoning the onset of symptoms is usually rapid and include excessive salivation, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea. More severe cases are manifested by hyperactive reflexes and convulsions. In the most severe case of internal fluoride poisoning, death will occur within a few hours to 24 hours, usually the result of respitory or cardiac failure. If the patient has ingested a small amount, instruct him to drink a pint of milk to counteract the effects. For larger amounts, vomiting should be induced with syrup of ipecac, a teaspoon of mustard in salt water or by physical means. After vomiting has occurred, large amounts of aluminum or magnesium should be administered. Commercial preparations of aluminum and magnesium include Maalox or Milk of Magnesia.
